I'm just amazes me at the number of people who are saying "you got what you deserved" and "learn the game mechanics noob". There is a significant barrier to entry for EVE because it is so complicated and subtle nuisances could spell your death at any moment. The casual player is at a serious disadvantage and becomes prey for the grief predators.
EVE is a double edged sword - I like the game because the commitment and complication keeps most of the riff-raff away but it also means that you do lose some good people along the way as well due to frustration factor.
This game has so many loop-holes and twists to the game mechanics that the casual player is going to get burned from time to time to such grief play as the OP illustrates. The problem is that this blatant grief play has become so common place that we are losing people who would otherwise stick with the game and add to the experience.
It's a fine line to tread on how to accomplish keeping the barrier to entry enough where the game I love so much stays intact but not so much that the lack of a subscriber base forces the game to wither on the vine.
p.s. One final thought - It bemuses me so to see the same people who say "sucks to be you because you don't know game mechanics" are also making other posts in C&P that basically say "it's not fair that people are able to employ log-off tactics to avoid gate camps". Umm, last I checked they are both using exisiting game mechanics. I guess the distinction is that in one case the prey doesnt have a way out while in the other, the prey can escape.

Is this what happened? If so, why even cry about the loss? It's corp insured, so it's no bother, right?
Fact is, this is just another attempt for a strawman, but nice try.

I don't know if this is what happened or not. My point was that casual players can and do fly faction equipped ships. Just because somebody has something nice and shiny doesnt mean they are veterens to the game. I will also agree that a fool and his money are soon parted. What I do find troublesome is that using flawed game mechanics to prey on the uninformed while they are in the process of determining if this game is worth it, can only hurt the long term player base. If this was an isolated incident then this would be an issue but this isnt an isolated incident - this is a trend of bored veterens staying awake at night looking for loop-holes in order to prey on the new/casual players. You are saying this is all about ISK - well, if that was true, then why the need to boast and brag about the CON in C&P? I see this for what it really is - grief play.
And to be honest, I have no clue what a strawman is?!?

what corp does that?
my alt would very much like a corp-provided faction fitted navythron.
My main's corp did that for me ^-^
But I will admit that the corp that helped me is based on Real Life friends that finally convinced me to give EVE a try and they gave me a leg up. I would guess that this isnt all that uncommon so you will find those running around in ships that they really can't fly yet. You will also find the loners who have a goal to fly a particular ship and they soley train for that ship. Training occurs whether or not you are actually playing the game so all it takes is a quick log-in to set the skill and a reminder in outlook for when you when to change skills. A person doing this could gain the skills and still only play a few hours each week. That by no means makes this person a skilled [veteren] player and I would consider him a casual player.
Some people have lives outside of EVE and real-life committments make it so they can not dedicate vast time and resources learning all the subtle nuisances of the game. These casual players pay the same subscription fees - why chase them away with grief play based on arcane and twisted uses of game mechanics that really are not that intuitive?
The bored veterens need a different avenue to get thier kicks. It seems they have exhausted all the normal avenues of fun and can only get enjoyment by bringing misery to those weaker than them - the classic bully.
